Game Description

Sole is an abstract, aesthetic-driven mobile adventure where you play as the only source of light in a world shrouded in darkness. Wander through desolate environments, painting the land with light as you discover its mysterious past.

What makes it experimental?

It’s been a little over two years now since we first began working on Sole and up until very recently, if you had asked me what I’d spent all that time working on, I would’ve had a very difficult time trying to come up with an answer. Mechanically speaking, the game is tremendously simple. You simply move through the environment, painting the world with light as you explore.

But unlike some narrative exploration games, Sole focuses less on explicit storytelling and more on building atmosphere through music and visuals. The act of wandering alone through a strange dark world is meant as an abstract expression of the creators’ relationships, spirituality, and sexual orientation while also perfectly symbolizing our creative struggle to bring this game to life.

When you open up the App Store, you’ll find thousands of brightly-colored, fast-paced, and social games. We were curious in how we might design a mobile game that’s the exact opposite of all that. The contradiction in playing a game all about feeling lost and alone on a such inherently social devices was fascinating to us. By defying the norms of mobile game design, we hope to create an immersive gameplay experience that is just as accessible to audiences of all demographics and skill levels as it is engaging.

By approaching the game’s mechanics as an allegory for our personal and creative lives and experimenting with immersion and isolation on platforms built for cultivating social experiences, we believe our approach to designing Sole is truly unique.
